When our cattle came to market direct from the range, never having eaten anything but rank buncbgrass on Uncle Sam's domain, and inatead of being weighed were just counted s4 and bought so much a bead, there was money made in scrub, but that day is post and with it the scrub must go. The well-bred sire must come into general use and more alfalfa and grain must find its way to market through the type of steer that will make a profit for the killer as well as the producer." T. II. Wynn, the company's right of way man, ia busily en gaged securing contracts for right of way over the lands through which it is proposed to build tbe railroad. It is said that he is meeting with great success and that al the land owners along the proposed line are enthusiastically granting all reasonable requests for right of way. As to the matter of granting the right of way, the conditions are set forth in the following form which is the contract signed by Ed Hodson of Prineville, who owns a Tanch in the Lamonta section. Right of Wy Contract "In consideration of the sum of One Dollar, and other good and valuable considerations, the under signed hereby bargains, sells and conveys unto the Central Oregon Railroad Company, its successors and assigns, forever, a strip of land 100 feet in width, for the purpose of constructing and maintaining thereon a railroad to be operated by eteam, electricity or other motive power, and for constructing and maintaining telegraph and telephone poles and lines thereon. In a letter to the people of Crook County, published in the Madras Pioneer, General Manager Roscoe Howard of the D. I. & P. Co., sets forth the practical workings of the plan on which the effort will be made to finance and build the road. The letter is here given in full and will be of great interest to the people of the county: Mr. Howard' Letter. "The Central Oregon Railroad Company has been organized for the purpose of building a railroad in Central Oregon. It is proponed to connect with the Columbia Southern at Shaniko and build via Madras to Prineville, Redmond and Beud. If better connection can be secured than at Shaniko, it will be taken advantage of. The Portlaud Cham ber of Commerce is Interesting tho business men of Portland iu the project of a railroad for this country. Some of the most Influential busl- ' neBS men of Portlaud have been con sulted and have given assurance that If liberal support Iu this country could be given the project the bonds to complete the road will be sub scribed In Portland and elsewhere. In addition to the common stock of the railroad one million dollars in 7 per cent preferred stock and ono million bonds will be issued. There will be no stock or bond bonus given to anyone. The etock aud bonds will represent the cost of the roads and no more. It la proposed that the preferred stock be subscribed for in this country. This feature to gether' with the interest Portland has In the building of tills road wl't make the sale of bonds assured. (Continued on page 4.) (
